Boarding Up Your Home

Should you board up your home when a hurricane threatens?

When a hurricane threatens your area, should you board up your home?  And, if so, should you use screws, nails, or another method?  One of the first things that you’ll need to think about is whether you can get adequate plywood to do the job.

Fortunately, most home improvement stores, lumber yards, and other materials suppliers normally order extra plywood at the start of hurricane season, and some large chains even have the ability to have extra stock shipped in just days before the storm hits.  Unfortunately, when the time comes that you’re concerned about boarding up your house, so is everyone else, and it may actually be too late to get enough plywood and supplies to protect your home.  That’s why it’s imperative that you plan ahead.

If you own your home, and you live in an area that is regularly threatened by hurricanes and tropical storms, before the storm season starts, consider purchasing enough lumber to board up your windows whenever necessary.  Shop around and get the best quality plywood that you can find at the best “off season” pricing.  If your windows are large, you may need a full sheet for each window.

Then, consider how you’ll secure the boards to your house.  Many people use screws or nails, and while this is adequate to secure the boards, in the long run, using screws or nails can damage your window and door frames and/or the area around the windows and doors.  A much better solution would be to use Plylox Windstorm Window Clips.  Sold in packs of five, these clips are attached to the plywood.  Then, they literally slide into your window openings, without the need to drill holes, use nails, or other permanent attachments to your home.

Simply cut each sheet of plywood to fit, attach the clips, and your hurricane protection is ready to slide into the window casing.  Your home is protected in less than one fourth of the time it would take to screw or nail up the plywood sheets.  And, when the storm is over, just slide the plywood sheets out of the window and you’re back in business.

The combination of plywood and clips cost far less per window than conventional hurricane shutters, and they can be safely stored in your garage, storage shed, or other dry area for use whenever you need them.

Other than conventional, permanent (and expensive) hurricane shutters, there is no better solution than Plylox Windstorm Window Clips to protecting your home whenever a storm threatens.
